Huon Financial Planning is a boutique financial planning firm based in Albury Wodonga, specialising in pre-retirement and retirement planning. Through word-of-mouth referrals and an excellent personal and tailored service, the firm has developed strong client relationships. Today, Huon not only looks after local clients but has clients in a variety of locations including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

When Huon Financial Planning relocated to their own premise in 2016, it was evident they needed a specialist IT partner to take care of their IT solutions, so they partnered with MicrotechDPS (MDPS).

Since then, MDPS has provided ongoing services for management, maintenance and upkeeping of servers, computers, multifunction printers and network devices.

Early in the onboarding process, MDPS identified the opportunity to optimise the environment through the implementation of windows domains and Office 365. This streamlined the workflow for Huon and facilitated the central management of services and devices.

Huon also benefits from utilising the Ricoh Interactive Whiteboard, recommended by MDPS, which is an effective tool for interactions and collaboration with their clients during face to face and remote meetings. It brings a large improvement to the way Huon presents information and interacts with their clients, keeping them fully engaged.

MDPS has continued to guide and recommend enhanced IT solutions to Huon as their business requirements change and grow. For example, in 2019 the firm implemented a major network upgrade and backup cloud solution which significantly improved business performance, stability and security. 

Moving forward, MDPS and Huon plan to upgrade the firm’s cyber security using new technologies involving biometrics and geolocation.

Our workforces are becoming increasingly mobile. Before we know it, our workplaces will reflect something of a hybrid workforce – with the staff here, there, and everywhere (or more specifically, in the office or at home).

But as we become more comfortable with this new reality, it is important that organisations consider everything necessary to best empower a team of hybrid employees. Things like:

  • Collaboration tools and best practice
  • Security in and out of the office
  • Right-sizing devices according to persona and workstyle
  • Correct home-office environment
  • Sufficient connectivity at home
  • Maintaining a close-knit team when not physically together

    There’s an insatiable number of video conferencing, instant messaging and collaboration platforms that facilitate communication and document sharing amongst teams out there these days. The key is to identify the right ones for your organisation and stick to them.

    Employ a blanket approach whereby the entire business uses one video conferencing platform, and so on and so forth. Having multiple systems being used opens the door to downtime and security risks. As an example, when choosing your video conferencing platform, ensure it delivers encrypted meetings.

    And likewise, with instant messaging and team platforms – ensure everyone is using the same tools to avoid downtime.

  • 2. Security in and out of the office.

    With a hybrid workforce, you need security tools, features and policies to go where your staff go. Ensure you’re enforcing multi-factor authentication for all business-critical data and systems. Ensuring all staff devices are kept up to date and patched is imperative, as is educating your staff on the do’s and don’ts of internet usage and identifying potentially malicious emails, text messages, websites and download files.

    • Is the network secure enough to be handling business-critical data?
